SPE Europe Energy Conference (EuropEC) 2025
SPE EuropEC's second edition (after 2024 Turin) — the European petroleum and energy community's primary technical conference. EarthScan attended to track the OMV / Equinor / TotalEnergies AI-MLOps stories.
EuropEC 2025 in Vienna ran four days, drawing operators, service companies and the academic geoscience community to roughly 200 technical paper sessions plus the exhibition floor.
Why we attended
The 2025 edition carried two threads we wanted live readings on:
- Operator-side MLOps maturity — OMV Norge presented their sustainable / green offshore rig operations road map, including model-deployment pipelines for production-line decision automation. Several other operators ran similar sessions.
- The European energy-transition framing — the conference theme leaned into renewables-adjacent themes (geothermal, carbon capture monitoring, hydrogen storage geology) more than the US-side equivalents typically do.
What EarthScan took away
- AI-pipeline reproducibility is the operator-side bottleneck.
Most teams have working ML models; few have working retraining
- drift-monitoring + audit-trail infrastructure.
- Subsurface digital twins are still 2-3 years from being commercially deployable in the operator workflows we'd want to integrate with — but the trajectory is clear.
- Carbon storage monitoring is a near-term opportunity area for EarthScan's seismic-interpretation toolkit; we'll be publishing follow-up notes.
Strong programme. We'll be back at EuropEC 2026 (Istanbul).
